Sliema Wanderers claimed the first honour of the season after beating champions Valletta in style to win the Lowenbrau Cup. The Blues took advantage of a most poor performance by the Citizens, managing to score five goals which could have been more had they been more careful up front and had Valletta goalkeeper Sean Sullivan performed a couple of excellent saves.

Sliema coach Jeff Wood left Massimo Grima out of the squad despite the absence of Luke Dimech at the back. The only change from Thursday's game was the inclusion of Kevin Sammut. Krassimir Manolov, who most probably, was guiding the Citizens for the last time before leaving to Bulgaria, had Darren Debono back in the starting line-up while David Carabott and Daniel Theuma who missed the first game were included as substitutes.

Valletta went close after four minutes when Chris Oretan, served by Mraz on the right, dribbled a couple of players, providing Karl Bonnici with an excellent pass. However the latter's powerful drive ended just wide. Three minutes later a cross shot by Ivan Zammit was blocked by Said. Efforts by Nicky Saliba and Ivan Zammit were cleared by the Sliema defence. On the other side of the pitch, on the eleventh minute, Massimo Beghetto tried his luck for Sliema but his attempt was off target. But two minutes later a Carmel Busuttil shot was partially saved by Sullivan. David Camilleri took the rebound planting the ball at the back of the net. Sliema were just a few centimetres away from doubling the score on the 21st when former Valletta striker, Danilo Doncic, dashed past Sulivan but his goal-bound shot from a close angle was stopped by Rennie Forace. The Citizens replied with a freekick from the right by Karl Bonnici ending just over the bar. Nine minutes from the end of the first half, Valletta levelled the score. Off a cross from the right by Karl Bonnici, with a perfect header, Chris Oretan beat Sliema goalie Murphy Akanji. But six minutes later, Sliema regained the lead as off a freekick by David Camilleri from the left, Massimo Beghetto caught Sullivan slightly out of place, heading the ball over him. Seconds later, Sullivan came to Sliema's rescue turning into a corner a powerful shot by Doncic. But one minute in injury time, Sliema scored the third goal when Carmel Busuttil received a through pass, rounded the goalkeeper and placed the ball at the back of the net.

With a goal five minutes in the second half, Valletta seemed to get back in the game. Off a freekick from the right by Jeffrey Chetcuti, Darren Debono anticipated Akanji heading the ball home. But Sliema soon restored a two-goal lead thanks to a defensive blunder on the 58th minute. Danilo Doncic won the ball as Chetcuti served Theuma, served Massimo Beghetto on the left whose low shot beat Sullivan. Akanji deflected into a corner, a freekick by Karl Bonnici. Sliema went three goals ahead as they scored the fifth goal on the 65th minute. Off a cross from the right, Danilo Doncic headed home. The only moment of suspense was six minutes from time when Scottish defender Derek Collins almost committed an own goal when he hit the upright with a header.

A depleted Birkirkara side suffered a second defeat in the Lowenbrau as Sliema Wanderers registered a 2-1 win over Birkirkara in the second game of the Lowenbrau Cup. With a good overall performance, the Blues scored a goal in each half by Busuttil and Kevin Sammut before the Stripes reduced the gap in injury time. The Blues had several players making their debut, namely Nigerian national goalkeeper Murphy Akanji, former Floriana defenders Brian Said and Richard Buhagiar, ex-Vicenza midfielder Massimo Beghetto together with striker Danilo Doncic. Scottish defender Derek Collins was included as a substitute. Birkirkara welcomed back Micheal Spiteri who missed the first game due to a suspension while Lucian Dronca was suspended.

Akanji had an excellent performance while Beghetto did quite well especially in the first half. Birkirkara's Nigerian striker Chimezie Nwoke was substituted at the end of the first half as he once again failed to impress.

Sliema took the lead on the 13th. Off a cross from the left by Massimo Beghetto, Brian Said served Carmel Busuttil whose excellent header gave Reuben Debono no chance. A minute later, off an insidious cross by Hubert Suda from the right, Akanji saved well. The Nigerian keeper performed a great save on a freekick by Antoine Zahra a few minutes later. On the other side of the pitch, a first time shot by Beghetto ended just wide. On the half-hour, Danilo Doncic started a counter-attack on the left, beat Reuen Debono who had dashed out of the area to anticipate but the Yugoslav striker's angled shot was cleared off the goalline by Scicluna. Two minutes from time, Beghetto was again unlucky to have a diagonal shot from the left ending just wide with Debono beaten. Just before half-time, Nwoke took advatage of a defensive blunder but Akanji saved.

Goalmouth action was lacking in the initial stages of the second half. Twenty minutes in the second half, two players were sent off. Following a rough tackle by Wiseman on Richard Buhagiar, Luke Dimech pushed the South African striker and referee sent off both Wiseman and Dimech. Birkirkara coach Alfred Cardona was also sent off. The Stripes went close with a freekick from the left by Hubert Suda but the Sliema defence cleared in time. Six minutes from time, Sliema secured victory with a goal by substitute Kevin Sammut, whose shot from outside the area gave Debono no chance. Matthew Calascione had a good chance to reduce the gap but his effort was blocked by Ian Ciantar. However in injury time, Calascione deflected a shot by Lino Galea to surprise Akanji for Birkirkara's consolation goal.

A late goal by Chris Oretan gave Valletta a 2-1 win over ten-man Birkirkara in the first game of the Lowenbrau Cup. In a rather entertaining game played in the heat of July, Birkirkara were the better side in the first half with the two teams sharing the exchanges in the second half. Several players were making their debut for Birkirkara namely Mark Anthony Bonnici, foreigners Lucia Dronca, Wiseman Xolani and Chimezie Nwoke while Reuben Debono was included as a substitute. Kenneth Scicluna returned after a period on loan with Qormi. Valletta on the other hand were orphans of Gilbert Agius for the first time. His absence was dearly felt in attack. Clive Mizzi and Jeremy Agius returned for Valletta after being on loan with other clubs last season.

On the 3rd minute, Birkirkara missed a golden opportunity to take the lead when a shot by William Camenzuli hit the foot of the post with Sullivan failing to hold. However, rather than placing the ball into the empty net, Xolani Wiseman incredibly hit wide. However ten minutes later, the Stripes tok the lead. Following a good run, Lucian Dronca served Xolani Wiseman who served Hubert Suda with an intelligent pass inside the area. Suda wasted no time in beating Sullivan with a powerful shot. On the 32nd, Suda entered the area on the left pulling to goal and crossed but Jeffrey Chetcuti cleared in time. Three minutes in their first shot addressed at goal, Pavel Mraz beat Savic with a diagonal shot. However assistant referee JR Attard signalled an offside. Four minutes from time, Birkirkara missed another chance as Wiseman failed to hit hard off a perfect cross by Lino Galea from the left. Goalkeeper Reuben Debono replaced the injured Robert Savic in goal. Hardly a minute had passed and Valletta levelled the score. Kris Laferla beat Debono with a low shot from the edge of the area.

One minute in the second half, Debono saved at point blank an attempt by Kamil Dvorak. A freekick from the right by Karl Bonnici was deflected into a corner while a powerful drive by William Camenzuli on the other side of the pitch was saved by Sullivan. Incursions on the right towards the 65th minute by Mark Anthony Bonnici first and Hubert Suda a few seconds later created havoc in the Valletta area but in some way or another defenders managed to clear the danger. Fifteen minutes from time, Lucian Dronca was sent off for Birkirkara. The Romanian defender received a second yellow card for foolishly handling the ball in midfield. One minute in injury time, Chris Oretan shocked the Birkirkara supporters as he placed the ball at the back of the net off a pass from the right by Jeremy Agius.
