Sliema Wanderers claimed the second honour of the season after winning the Super 5 Cup final. With a fine performance, the Wanderers crushed Valletta 4-1. They were undoubtedly the better side throughout the 90 minutes and it was only for a short period of time that the Citizens managed to get back in the game.

With strikers Danilo Doncic and Orosco Anonam in top form, it was next to impossible for the Valletta rear-guard to stop them. Doncic and Anonam scored a brace each. Both were also unlucky to hit the posts, just like their team mate Nenad Veselji.

Valletta coach Georgi Deanov made only one change from the team which defeated Hibs last week with John Buttigieg replacing David Carabott. This meant that former Sliema goalie Ernest Barry was once again preferred to Sean Sullivan. Barry performed a number of good saves and definitely cannot be blamed for the defeat. Daniel Theuma and Darren Debono were unavailable for selection. With Brian Said and Noel Turner still ruled out due to injures, Sliema coach Jeff Wood confirmed the same players who defeated Birkirkara 3-0.

Right from the start, Sliema created the better chances. On the 18th minute, an insidious long-distance shot by Carlo Mamo was saved with particular difficulty by Barry and a minute later, Orosco Anonam was unlucky not to put Sliema ahead with a shot from a close range which hit the foot of the post before being cleared by a defender. Sliema took the lead on the 22nd with Orosco Anonam giving Ernest Barry no chance with a perfect header off a freekick by Carlo Mamo from the left.

On the 32nd minute, Orosco Anonam sent Carlo Mamo through inside the area but Barry saved. On the other side of the pitch, Kris Laferla tested Murphy Akanji with a diagonal shot from the right. In stoppage time, Sliema doubled the score. A shot by Rupert Mangion from the edge of the area was deviated by Danilo Doncic and Ernest Barry could only deflect the ball onto the upright before ending at the back of the net.

One minute in the second half, Luke Dimech came to Sliema's rescue clearing off the goal-line a goal-bound shot by Chris Oretan with Akanji beaten. On the 55th, off a corner from the right, Danilo Doncic's first-time volley hit the bar. Three minutes later, after a 40-metre run on the left, Doncic served Nenad Veselji but the former Valletta and Birkirkara striker's shot from the edge of the area hit the posts. On the 63rd minute, Valletta reduced the gap. Off a corner by Karl Bonnici from the right, Kris Laferla surprised the Sliema defence heading past Akanji.

But their joy was short-lived as hardly a minute later, the Citizens were reduced to ten men when Beppe Pace received a second yellow card for a foul and as they pushed harder for the equalizer, Sliema hit back to restore the two-goal lead. Off a counter-attack, Orosco Anonam advanced on the right, crossed and Danilo Doncic was at the right place at the right time to fire past Barry on the 68th. Thirteen minutes from time, Valletta captain Kris Laferla was the second player to receive marching orders when he was sent off for a rough tackle on Massimo Grima as some of the Valletta players seemed to lose their heads. A goal by Orosco Anonam three minutes from time left no doubt which way the Super Cup was going. The Nigerian striker scored with a low shot from the right on edge of the area. Just before the final whistle, John Buttigieg was the third Valletta player to be sent off for hitting an opponent without the ball.

As expected the final for the third and fourth place between the losing semi-finalists, Hibernians and Birkirkara, hardly raised any enthusiasm.

Both sides lacked several key players. Hubert Suda, Sunday Eboh, Lucian Dronca, Michael Spiteri and Matthew Calascione were all ruled out due to injuries for Birkirkara while Kenneth Scicluna was suspended. On the other hand, Roderick Baldacchino and Silvio Vella were missing for Hibernians after being handed a one-match ban by the MFA Disciplinary Commissioner while Ndubisi Chukunyere and Miguel Mifsud were unavailable as they are recovering from injuries. Goalkeepers Reuben Debono and Rainier Farrugia replaced Robert Savic and Mario Muscat respectively.

The two teams shared the exchanges in the early stages. An insidious direct corner by Adrian Ciantar missed the target by a whisker for Hibernians with Reuben Debono beaten. But Birkirkara took the lead on the 24th. Lino Galea served Michael Galea inside the area who headed the ball down for Michael Cutajar and the nippy striker beat Rainier Farrugia with a low shot from inside the area. Off a cross from the right, Ciantar tested Debono from close-range but the goalkeeper managed to block. Following a good move by Hibs' Antoine Zahra on the right, Adrian Mifsud had a good shot from close blocked by Debono and a few minutes later, off a cross from the right, the Hibs striker once again went close with a shot cleared off the goal-line by Camenzuli on the half hour. The Stripes replied with a low shot by Cutajar from the edge of the area ending just wide. Hibs levelled the score on the 34th minute. William Camenzuli pushed Mifsud inside the area and the referee ordered a penalty. From the penalty spot, Essien Mbong converted.

Ten minutes in the second half, Birkirkara missed a good chance as Michael Galea received a through pass just outside the area but he was anticipated by the goalkeeper. The Paolites managed to turn the score in their favour on the 68th minute. Although obstructed by two defenders, young Terrence Scerri managed to serve Adrian Mifsud inside the area and the latter beat Debono from close range. Fifteen minutes from time, Scerri could have made it 3-1 but he was unlucky to hit the bar with the goalkeeper beaten.

In the first semi-final, Valletta won 2-1. Although lacking Darren Debono, Daniel Theuma and John Buttigieg, the Citizens were still the better side, taking the lead in the first half. The second half was marked by a couple of controversial decisions by referee Roberto Buontempo.

Valletta took the lead on 17 minutes. Nicky Saliba served Chris Oretan with a perfect pass from the right and the Nigerian striker hit home. The Paolites' reaction consisted of an acrobatic shot by Adrian Mifsud saved by Valletta goalkeeper Ernest Barry.

Three minutes in the second half, Valletta were lucky not to have defender Jeffrey Chetcuti sent off when he floored Adrian Mifsud who was heading all alone towards the area. The referee only cautioned the international defender. Three minutes later, Hibs defender Roderick Baldacchino was sent off after receiving a second yellow card. On 56 minutes, the Citizens doubled the score when a shot by Kamil Dvorak from the left was held by Mario Muscat almost on the goalline. Assistant referee Philip Agius had no doubts and signalled a goal. Eleven minutes from time, Hibs captain Silvio Vella was sent off. Although the foul seemed identical to that of Jeffrey Chetcuti, the referee this time gave marching orders to Vella. One minute from time, Hibs were awarded a penalty which Adrian Mifsud duly converted.

Sliema Wanderers found no difficulty in disposing of Birkirkara 3-0 to reach the final of the Super 5 Cup. The Blues dominated from start to finish taking an early lead, never allowing their opponents to get back in the game. The Stripes were a poor outfit as the gap left wide open by Michael Spiteri, who is ruled out till the end of the season, is more than clear. Up front, Michael Galea, Matthew Calascione and Chucks Nwoko failed to leave an impact.

It took Sliema just three minutes to take the lead. Nenad Veselji received a through pass by Anonam on the right and on entering the area, he anticipated Savic with a perfect lob. A dangerous diagonal shot by Anonam on 22 minutes was turned into a corner by Savic. Eight minutes from the end of the first half, Sliema doubled the score. Veselji served Danilo Doncic inside the area and the Premier League top scorer intelligently flicked the ball home past Savic. Birkirkara missed a golden opportunity to reduce the gap a couple of minutes later but Lino Galea hit high from an ideal position after that a Chucks Nwoko effort was blocked by Akanji. Three minutes from time, Veselji missed a sitter after Anonam left him unmarked on the left.

Midway in the second half, Orosco Anonam advanced all alone into the area, only to have his shot hitting the foot of the upright but ten minutes from time, Anonam served David Camilleri on the left. His pass went for the unmarked Danilo Doncic who scored the third goal to seal the issue. Eight minutes from time, Birkirkara were reduced to ten men as Kenneth Scicluna was sent off for hitting Anonam.
