Three days after winning the Rothmans Trophy for the first time in the history of the club, Birkirkara managed to win the Rothmans Super Cup for the first time as well beating Premier League champions Hibernians 1-0 after extra-time.

Despite lacking influential duo Essien Mbong and Ndubisi Chukunyere, Hibernians shared the exchanges with their opponents although the Stripes created the better chances.

Hibernians had goalkeeper Mario Muscat guarding the posts despite getting married in the morning. Unfortunately the Malta international goalkeeper ruined a fine performance with a blunder which led to the only Birkirkara goal. Birkirkara striker Michael Cutajar who got married a day earlier was also included in the starting line-up by coach Stephen Azzopardi.

Birkirkara created the better chances in the first half. On 8 minutes, Calascione concluded a good run with a fine shot saved by Mario Muscat. Then, off a cross by Calascione, Michael Cutajar hit wide. Michael Galea went close with a low shot on the 16th and two minutes later, Nisevic sent Antoine Zahra through but his conclusion was too weak for Birkirkara goalie Savic. A beautiful volley by Calascione from the right on the 23rd was turned into a corner by Mario Muscat. Then a powerful drive by Joe Brincat was saved by Muscat in two attempts.

Hibs started on a better note in the second half. After just one minute, Savic performed a good save on a Pulis effort from inside the area and then on 59 minutes, off a cross by Pulis from the left, Antoine Zahra hit wide from an ideal position inside the area. A good shot by Lucian Dronca for Birkirkara ended just over the bar thirteen minutes from time. Three minutes later, it was Chucks Nwoko who had a golden opportunity to put Birkirkara ahead when he received a through pass inside the area. However his conclusion was deviated into a corner. From the resulting corner, Michael Galea's curved shot was saved by Mario Muscat. On 86 minutes, Calascione exchanged the ball with Michael Galea but the former's shot from in front of the goalkeeper ended high. Muscat then performed a good save on a shot by Brincat from inside the area. In stoppage time, a header by Dronca was tipped into a corner by Muscat.

Six minutes in extra-time, Birkirkara scored the all-important goal when Calascione won a tussle for the ball with Nisevic and Muscat on the edge of the area. Michael Galea received the ball and hit home despite Mario Muscat's desperate attempt to save. At this point, the champions went all out in search of the equaliser. In a counter-attack just before the end of the first half, Michael Galea could have doubled the score but Muscat performed a great save.

Chucks Nwoko wasted a fine move hitting incredibly high. Four minutes from the end, substitute Terence Scerri, served by Pullicino, had a good shot from the edge of the area, saved by Savic. In the final stages, there were harsh protests by the Paolites when appeals for penalties for fouls on Adrian Mifsud and Roderick Baldacchino inside the area were turned down by referee Anton Zammit.

Hibs supporters reacted by throwing seats in the direction of the match officials and into the VIP Area. The presentation of the Super Cup in fact had to be delayed until the Hibs supporters left the stadium. Then Birkirkara captain Joe Brincat was presented with the trophy by MFA senior vice-president Carmel Bartolo.
