- UEFA unveiled plans for a revamped Champions' League and UEFA Cup. The Champions League would be made up of 32 clubs. The European Club Football 2000 Task Force also revealed a plan to merge the European Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Cup into one competition, probably under the name of UEFA Cup. UEFA's proposal for a new merged cup involves 114 teams playing in preliminary qualifying rounds which would be followed by a knockout competition. Eventually 32 teams would play in a mini-league series of eight groups of four before reverting to a knockout competition from the quarter-finals onwards. Clubs from small countries like Malta would be entitled to take part in both competitions. The champions take part in the qualifying round of the Champions League while another club or two (depending on the ranking of the country) would take part in the other competiton. This is all in response to the Media Partners' Super League Project which is proposing a Super League for 36 clubs and a Pro Cup for 96 clubs. Only one club from small countries like Malta would be entitled to take part in the Pro Cup while none would participate in the Super League.
