A heavy downpour early in the second period did not dampen the Maltese spirits. They resiliently kept up the pressure and were rewarded with a fine headed goal by hard-working striker Miguel Ciantar from a fine Mark Scerri cross on 69 minutes. With the deadlock broken, Mark Scerri himself and Jonathan Xerri both missed easy chances to increase Malta's tally towards the end.

- UEFA Women's Championship Malta vs Lithuania 0-0
The Malta women's national team continued where it had left in the FIFA Women's World Cup qualifier against Bosnia-Herzegovina in June, obtaining another positive result by holding Lithuania in a goalless draw in the first game from Group A3 of the preliminary round of the UEFA Women's Championship 2007/2009.
The mini-tournament is being held in Luxembourg.
Lithuania are considered to be a much stronger side than Malta and considering the latest FIFA Women's World Ranking, Lithuania was 60th and Malta 109th.
This is the second consecutive positive result for Pierre Brincat's side following last June's 1-1 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina at the Hibs Ground. However what is most remarkable is the fact that the draw against Lithuania was obtained away from home.
On Monday, Malta faces hosts Luxembourg, who lost to Slovakia 0-4 on Saturday. The last game for Malta is against Slovakia on Thursday.
- The new Licensing Regulations Applicable to Premier Division Member Clubs who intend to apply for a UEFA Licence to compete in UEFA competitions as from season 2008/09 were presented to the Council for approval on Thursday.
These regulations are based on version 2.0 of the UEFA Club Licensing Manual. The new version contains significant changes to sporting criteria, and the requirement of greater financial discipline for the financial area.
Sporting changes include the obligation for all players to undergo medical examinations, namely cardio-vascular screening, following the sudden deaths in recent years of several professional players.
Clubs will have to supply detailed budget information as part of a stricter financial approach within the system. An interim report has to be reviewed by an auditor while future financial information should be provided in the form of a forecast of the income and expenditure by the club in order to show that the club is a going concern. The Balance Sheet, which would have to be approved by a club's annual general meeting next June, should be in the form required by UEFA.
MFA president Dr Joe Mifsud and MFA Licencing Manager Mr Mario Gauci gave an overview of the criteria, particularly the new conditions which will have to be adhered to.
These regulations were approved by the Council.
UEFA's club licensing scheme is based on a series of defined quality standards, which must be fulfilled in order for a club to be admitted to any of the UEFA competitions. These minimum requirements cover the areas of sporting, infrastructure, personnel, administration, legal and financial matters.

- Under 21 Friendly Match Tunisia vs Malta 2-1
The Malta Under-21 side lost 2-1 to Tunisia in a friendly match at the El Menzah Olympic Stadium in Tunis on Tuesday.
Mark Miller's team shared the exchanges with their opponents especially in the second period.
Malta started well, with Matthew Bartolo making his way through after a solo effort. However, with only the Tunisian goalkeeper to beat, he saw his effort blocked by the hosts' extreme defender.
In the 26th minute the same player made amends for his lost chance when he nipped in on a throw-in to put Malta ahead.
Tunisia equalised shortly afterwards through a header after the Maltese defenders were caught napping. The home team then went ahead in the 31st minute when the Malta goalkeeper was beaten after a long ball was served down the middle and propelled into the net.
The alert Ian Zammit was unfortunate to hit the upright shortly before half-time.
The Maltese improved in the second half, even if scoring chances at either end were not plentiful. Montfort saved a point-blank shot on the hour. In the dying minutes Julian Vella went near to levelling the score, but his shot was blocked.
According to reports from Tunisia, the match was a useful and positive work-out for Mark Miller's team. The coach will have to bank on a series of friendly matches in preparation for the next European Under-21 Championship.

- Following the unprecedented decision of the MFA Disciplinary Board regarding the alleged misbehaviour of supporters on racial grounds, whereby Birzebbuga St Peter's FC were fined the staggering amount of Lm 7,000, the club has filed in a notification of appeal.
While reiterating their position in condemning any disparaging act which might be construed as basing itself on reasons of ethnic or racial origins, or any other form of discrimination whatsoever, the club declared that, despite their disbelief in the way the matter was handled and interpreted, they are still confident that their arguments will be evaluated by the Appeals Tribunal and that the issue will be resolved in a just and fair way.
The club rejects the unfair image which such accusations might throw on its operation or on its members. Instead, it would like to highlight its proactive role outside its sporting functions in that its training facilities are now part of an open centre for immigrants who often watch or play side by side with youth players.

- Birzebbuga St. Peter's have been fined Lm 7,000 after being found guilty that some of their supporters had racially abused two Sliema Wanderers players during a Youth League Section A match on September 21 at the Centenary Stadium.
This was the first time that such a hefty fine was inflicted on a club after the Council of the Malta Football Association had approved amendments to regulations dealing with misconduct and incidents during competitive football matches last May. According to the amended regulations,
"Players, officials and supporters who publicly disparage, discriminate against or denigrate someone in a defamatory manner on account of race or language or religion or ethnic origin or had perpetrated any other discriminatory and/or contemptuous act, including the display by supporters of banners bearing discriminatory slogans, or had used blasphemous language or had used vulgar or obscene or insulting language or behaviour in a chorus, the Club shall be fined a minimum amount of seven thousand liri (Lm 7,000) ..."
These harsh sanctions had to be included in the MFA regulations after FIFA threatened any member association who fails to comply with Article 55 of the FIFA Disciplinary Code with the exclusion from international football for two years.
In a statement issued by FIFA on March 29, FIFA had asked all member associations to impose harsher sanctions following what was described as "a surge in discriminating gestures and language at football matches in recent months."
The statement said that "The confederations and associations are obliged to incorporate the provisions of this article in their disciplinary code and statutes and to enforce the sanctions stipulated. Any association fails to comply with this article will be excluded from international football for two years."

- Malta will be facing Lithuania in an international friendly match at the Hibernians Ground on Wednesday. This game forms part of the national team's preparation ahead of the forthcoming EURO 2008 qualifiers against Moldova and Greece in March.
The game has to be played at the Hibs Ground as the pitch of the National Stadium is still not ready to host games after the re-seeding process. This will be the second 'A' international match to be played at the Hibs Ground after Malta's 2-1 win over Canada in a friendly match in November 2001.
Speaking during a press-conference, national coach Dusan Fitzel said he will be aiming at another fine performance following last month's fine win over Hungary.
He admitted that when the association planned the game against Lithuania, the objective was to find a team which was more or less on the same level as Moldova. However by judging the results obtained so far by the Baltic state, the team is much stronger. In fact, following a 1-1 draw with Italy away from home, Lithuania lost narrowly to Scotland before beating Faroe Islands 1-0 in their last outing.
MFA president Dr Joe Mifsud agreed but said that the team still aimed at obtaining a positive result from the game.
This will be the second time Malta and Lithuania will be facing each other. In a match from the Rothmans International Tournament in February 2002, the two countries had shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.
Fitzel said that a number of players are recovering from slight injuries and should be fit for the game. On the other hand, one player who is ruled out is Marsaxlokk defender Luke Dimech. The former Mansfield and Chester City defender was involved in a car accident earlier this week.
Goalkeeper Justin Haber will not be available for the game due to club commitments in Belgium but Michael Mifsud will be in squad as the Norwegian league is over. Ian Ciantar and Ivan Woods, who both missed the game against Hungary last month, should be back.
The game will be controlled by referee Brian Lawlor from the FA of Wales. He will be assisted by three Maltese officials - assistant referees Ingmar Spiteri and Charles Micallef and fourth official Joe Attard.
The game on Wednesday, kicks-off at 14:00. Tickets for the game, costing Lm 2, will be available on match-day.
Meanwhile during the same press conference, the MFA president revealed that the association in conjunction with Melita Cable have issued a DVD to commemorate Malta's landmark victory over Hungary in a European Championship qualifying group match on October 11 - the first obtained by Malta in competitive match at Ta' Qali.
Melita Sales and Marketing officer Franco Degabriele revealed that Melita Cable is working hard to acquire the television rights of the international matches being played by Malta away from home. Melita have already secured the rights for the games against Norway in June and against Hungary in October.
- The Malta Women's National Team and the Malta Under-17 side will be taking part in UEFA mini-tournaments which kick-off next week.
The women's national team, under the guidance of coach Pierre Brincat, will be playing in Group A3 of the preliminary round of the UEFA Women's Championship between Saturday 18 and Thursday 23 in Luxembourg.
In the first game on Saturday, Malta faces Lithuania. The Maltese girls then meet hosts Luxembourg on Monday 20 and Slovakia on Thursday 23.
Malta will be hoping to build on the positive performances in recent outings and the first positive result obtained by the team in the last FIFA Women's World Cup qualifier against Bosnia-Herzegovina last June.
The squad leaves Malta on Thursday.
The Malta Under-17 side will be playing in Group 4 of the qualifying round of the UEFA Under 17 Championship. The tournament will be played in Malta between Friday 17 and Wednesday 22, the venues being the Hibernians Ground and the Victor Tedesco Stadium.
Malta meets Serbia on Friday at the Victor Tedesco Stadium, Italy on Sunday 19 at the Hibs Ground and Andorra on Wednesday at the Hibs Ground.
Under-17 coach Oliver Spiteri said the team has been working hard in view of this mini-tournament. In fact, they played no less than eleven international friendly matches and another two friendly matches against local Premier League clubs in preparing for the tournament.
Meanwhile another two Malta national teams will be playing friendly matches.
Next Tuesday, the Malta Under-21 side will be facing Tunisia in a friendly match in Tunis.
The two teams had already met last May at Ta' Qali with the visitors obtaining a 2-1 win.
Under-21 coach Mark Miller said he is satisfied with the players in his squad and the fact that there is a real competition for places. He said such friendlies give him the opportunity to try players in order to obtain a good idea of who are the right players which should form part of the squad in the next UEFA Under-21 qualifying campaign which gets underway in nine months' time.
Four players from the Under-19 side, namely goalkeeper Henry Bonello (Sliema), Tyrone Farrugia (Msida), Ben Camilleri (Hibernians) and Ryan Camilleri (Pietà), have in fact been promoted to the Under-21 squad.
The Malta Under-19 side will play two friendly matches against Georgia on December 5 and December 7.
Under the guidance of coach Edwin Camilleri, the team did very well last month in the UEFA Under-19 Championship mini-tournament. After a 1-1 draw with hosts Denmark, Malta lost 2-4 to France and drew 1-1 with Finland.
Camilleri said that despite the strength of the opponents, he had warned them that by giving their hundred percent effort, the team could still achieve positive results.
He said that the draw with Denmark raised the morale of his players and gave them enough stimulus for the other games and even if they went four goals down in the game against France, the players were strong enough to recover and reduce the gap. From the last game, Malta needed a 3-0 win, provided that Denmark lost to France.
Malta was leading 1-0 and scored a second goal but the referee controversially disallowed the goal. In the dying minutes, Finland notched the equaliser.
The Under-19 coach said that after the tournament, he allowed the players to train regularly with their clubs and only now have resumed training with the national team. Camilleri revealed that some Under-17 players will be promoted to the Under-19 side for the friendlies against Georgia.
He concluded by saying that the fact that the team is playing friendly matches on a regular basis is the key factor thanks to which the team did so well.
Another national team who will be making its debut in the coming weeks is the Malta Futsal national team.
Under the guidance of coach Michal Striz, the national team will be making its debut in international football in the UEFA Futsal Championship Mini-Tournament between January 15th and 21st at Corradino. Malta will be facing Georgia, Cyprus and Kazakhstan.
Striz said that the national team has been training three times a week and played four friendly matches against four First Division sides, winning them all. The team is now expected to play a friendly match against an Italian club after that a friendly against the Polish futsal national team was called off due to the latter's financial difficulties.
As regards the opponents, Striz believes Georgia are the strongest side in the group while Cyprus are more or less in the same level as Malta. On the other hand, he said he hardly knows anything about Kazakhstan as they used to play in the Asian confederation. The Czech coach did not rule out the possibility of Malta reaching the next stage as two teams qualify from the group.
Striz concluded that he is hoping that the fact that the tournament will be played in Malta will help to boost the game in Malta.
MFA president Dr Joe Mifsud added that the association is aiming at having more younger players playing Futsal since right now, most players are older once. He said that it is now a well-known fact that small-sided games are very important for youth development.
- The Malta Football Association is planning to finish two important projects next summer - the new MFA Headquarters at the Millennium Stand, Ta' Qali and the laying of a new artificial pitch at the Centenary Stadium.
Speaking during a press conference on Friday, MFA President Dr Joe Mifsud announced that the association is planning to inaugurate the new headquarters in June. Works on the premises which will be spread over two floors is well underway.
Last month, nine tenders amounting to over Lm 200,000 were awarded.
The new MFA Headquarters are also being made possible thanks to financial aid by UEFA and the cash received from the television rights for international matches.
Meanwhile works on the new pitch of the Centenary Stadium are set to start in June and should take about six weeks to finish.
The works include the removal of the old pitch, the levelling of the surface and the laying of the artificial turf.
The artificial turf will be of the FIFA 2-star type. Such pitches are approved by FIFA and UEFA for national team and club competitions.
The pitch would have to be analysed annually by a laboratory accredited by FIFA in order to receive the approval of the international body.

- A number of English clubs have been tracking Malta international striker Michael Mifsud, according to reports by Eurosport.
The striker has been playing for Lillestrom for the past eighteen months and has been offered a new contract by the Norwegian club. However Mifsud turned down the club's offer, amid claims from his agent that he hopes to move within weeks.
"This [contract] offer was better than the last one, and they gave me ten days to consider it, but there's not really much to think about," the 25-year-old told Norway's TV2.
Scouts from Bolton, Reading, Sheffield United, Norwich and Crystal Palace were all reportedly in attendance at Lillestrom's final game of the season against Lyn last Sunday.
"Now the season is over, we're hoping for something to happen within the next few weeks," said Mifsud's agent Mark Taylor. "There are many clubs who are interested in Michael," Taylor told Nettavisen.
The Malta international striker is also attracting the interest of Coventry City. The City, together with Watford, had already expressed their interest in the player this summer, especially after a fine performance in the UEFA Intertoto Cup qualifier against Newcastle at St. James Park.
Mifsud, scorer of 11 goals this season, is available on a free transfer in January.
A product of Sliema Wanderers, Mifsud had played for Kaiserslautern in Germany between August 2001 and November 2003. After spending another six months with Sliema, he moved to Norway in summer 2004.
- Former Malta international striker Carmel Busuttil has been appointed as the new coach of Pietà Hotspurs. He replaces Italian manager Davide Vittorio Fortunato who had joined the club in summer.
The Hotspurs were reportedly interested in Italian coach Francesco Moriero, a former Inter player. However the latter decided to take another job in Africa.
A product of Rabat Ajax, Busuttil played for Verbania in Italy and Genk in Belgium before returning to Malta and joining Sliema Wanderers. With Sliema, Busuttil had his first coaching experience as he acted as player-coach and caretaker player-coach together with Martin Gregory on two occasions.
In October 2003, Carmel Busuttil was appointed as assistant coach of the national team as the Malta Football Association intended appointing Busuttil as national coach two years later. However in June 2005, Busuttil stepped down from his job in order to focus once again on his duties at the Buzu Football School, the school managed by General Sports Enterprises which carries his own name.
Last season, Busuttil was appointed as coach of Third Division side Sta. Lucia, leading the club to the Third Division Play-Offs in which they placed third.
Busuttil will be making his debut as Pietà coach on December 2 in the BOV Premier League match against Floriana.
Pietà are currently anchored at the bottom of the table with just two points from eight league matches.
- The Hibernians Ground Management Board celebrated the twentieth anniversary since it was entrusted with the running of the Hibs Ground in Corradino on Thursday.
The stadium was inaugurated on November 9, 1986, by the then Minister for Works and Sport, Mr Lorry Sant.
Besides being the training grounds for Hibernians, the ground has been hosting Premier League and First Division matches for several years. The Hibs Ground has also hosted one national team friendly match and several Under-21 and women's national team matches. Next Wednesday, the Hibs Ground will be hosting the international friendly match between Malta and Lithuania.
Several foreign clubs also use the Hibs Ground for training camps.
To mark the twentieth anniversary, Hibs president Tony Bezzina, HGMB chairman Anthony Tabone and Carmen Sant, wife of the late Lorry Sant, planted a tree. Mr Bezzina and Mr Tabone also delivered speeches for this special occasion.
Amongst the special guests for this ceremony were members of the Sant family, Minister for Education Youth and Employment Dr Louis Galea, members of Parliament from both sides of the House, Paola Local Council members and former Hibernians committee members.
- The Youth Football Association (YFA) launched the Gatorade Fun Football Festival Season 2006/07 during a meeting held for all Youth Nurseries at the Farsons Brewery.
The games for Under-10 and Under-12 teams will be held between November and May with the biggest ever participation with nearly all affiliated nurseries 44 out of 45. The Under-10 matches will kick off on Saturday, 11th November whilst the Under-12 matches kick off on Saturday, 2nd December and both will be played at the Centenary Stadium.
“Players of this age look at these Fun Festivals with great enthusiasm and thus inspire our Association to continue working hard to organise these events,” said Mr Alfred Cacciatolo, Chairman of the Organising Committee for the Gatorade Fun Football Festival.
Fr Hilary Tagliaferro, President of the Youth FA, stressed the importance of discouraging competition and pressure on winning. “One has to look at the Gatorade Fun Football Festivals as a preparation of the physical, social and educational upbringing of the future of our youths. It is also important for parents and coaches to understand that a focus has to be made on fair play so that whilst developing children’s football skills, we are also building their characters,” said Fr Hilary.
Joe Micallef, General Secretary of the Youth FA delivered his gratitude to Farsons that, for the last nine consecutive years, supported the Association first with Pepsi and now with Gatorade as main sponsor of these events.
“This is the perfect opportunity for a sports brand that is associated worldwide with all types of sports especially football, to reach a young target market. During the Gatorade Fun Football Festivals, whilst improving their football skills, children are also developing social skills and enjoying themselves playing at a game they love,” said Mr Ivan Filletti, Marketing Manager, Simonds Farsons Cisk plc.
Ms Alison Schembri, Gatorade Brand Executive said “For these last eight years Pepsi has been the official sponsor for the Under-10 and Under-12 Football Festivals. This is the ninth year that a Farsons brand is sponsoring these festivals with Gatorade a leader in sports drinks. Gatorade will continue its support towards these young footballers to play fun football games in a proper environment. Gatorade will also serve to rehaydrate, replenish and refuel the young athletes during their games.”
Fr Hilary concluded by thanking Gatorade for its new support of children’s education through football and their cooperation in the organization of the festival.

- Sliema Wanderers and Malta forward Ivan Woods has landed the BOV Player of the Month award for October.
Although netting just twice during the month, albeit from only three games, the Blues’ striker is carrying the burden of providing the goals for his side almost single-handedly.
Statistics reveal this main responsibility and his eight goals out of his team’s total tally of 13 testify to this.
However, apart from his scoring instincts, this attacker’s remarkable work-rate very often catches the eye. His low centre of gravity is an asset which sees this player change pace and direction to send opponents the wrong way.
If he keeps up this momentum his contribution for Sliema Wanderers as the season unfolds may yet pave the way towards his team recovering some lost ground in their bid to climb up the table from the middle of the standings.
