- Hungarian side Ferencvaros will be visiting Malta for a one-week training camp starting on Friday 30th January and on Wednesday 4th February, they will be facing the MFA XI in a friendly match at the National Stadium, kick-off at 19:30.
Details about the visit of Ferencvaros, who are now part of the Sheffield United family of international clubs, and an exhibition which will be held in Malta next week were given during a press conference at the premises of the Malta Tourism Authority in Valletta on Thursday.
Addressing the media, MTA Chief Executive Officer Josef Formosa Gauci focused upon the strong relationship that exists between Malta and the Sheffield United football family.
"These initiatives are all part of our strong, ongoing relationship with Sheffield United, through which Malta's visual presence is increasing all across the UK". The MTA CEO added that through this close association with Sheffield United "the exposure of the Malta name was now even being highlighted in Hungary through the forthcoming visit of Sheffield United affiliate club Ferencvaros. Air Malta are now operating direct flights to Budapest, and this association with Ferencvaros can only increase our presence in the Hungarian market. The unique football memorabilia exhibition, the community programme visits as well as the Ferencvaros training camp are all ways in which Sheffield United and giving something back to Malta, too", concluded Mr Formosa Gauci.
Ferencvaros, or ‘Fradi' as they are affectionately known to their vast support, are probably the most famous club in Hungary. They have won the top League and the National Cup more times than any other Hungarian club and in season 1964/65 they proudly lifted the old Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. The club is currently top of the Hungarian Second Division and managed by former Sheffield United striker Bobby Davison. The game should prove a tough test for the players from Malta, but one they should relish and the football community of Malta will enjoy the skills of the home players and the visiting team.
Sheffield United legends Tony Currie and Alan Hodgkinson will be coming to Malta as part of the build-up to the game. They will be joined by current United star Gary Speed who holds the record number of Premier League appearances. Hodgkinson, who was the UK's first Goalkeeping Coach and who was awarded an MBE for his contribution the game, is to hold a Goalkeeping Master class Training session for a group of young Maltese footballers and local coaches are able to attend and watch if desired.

Exchange visits for members, and Football Coaching courses with Sheffield United goalkeeper Justin Haber have also been planned as part of the initiative. Sheffield United will be handing out flyers at the match or supporters can go on the Junior Blades website www.sufcjuniorblades.com to register.
Ten year old Zurrieq FC nursery player Daniel Abdilla, became the first signed up member of the Malta Junior Blades Initiative.
The arrival of the football memorabilia, however, is likely to be the highlight of the events.

This one document changed the sporting world forever and is regarded as one of the most priceless artefacts related to the game that exists today.
The first football trophy ever contested in the world is also part of the collection. It is known as the Youdan Cup and was won at Sheffield United's ground at Bramall Lane in 1867 by Hallam F.C, the world's second oldest Football Club who also herald from the city.
Sheffield United's rich history will be illustrated by many rare and valuable pieces. Two replicas of the four F.A Cups won by the Blades will be joined by various medals, caps, cup final shirts and also the actual ball used in the 1899 F.A Cup Final, which saw United beat Derby County by 4 goals to 1. This is one of the oldest surviving balls in English football.
Other items which will be exhibited include a replica of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup won by Ferencevaros, Tibor Nyilasi's Silver Boot Award and the Mitropa Cup - a ball-shaped trophy won for the second time by Ferencváros in 1937.
The history of United and the unique part Sheffield has played in the development of the game will be on display for all Maltese football fans to enjoy in the lead up to the game with Ferencvaros.
The exhibition will be held at the Auberge d'Italie, Merchants Street, Valletta between Wednesday 4 and Monday 9. On Wednesday, it will be open between 16:00 and 19:00. On the other days, it will be open between 08:00 and 19:00 except for Saturday and Sunday when it will be open between 08:30 and 13:00.
Also addressing the press conference were Mr John Garret, SUFC Museum Manager and Curator and Mr. David McCarthy, SUFC Operations Director of Football. Mr McCarthy had special words of praise for the Malta Football Association facilities, the hotels in Malta and especially for the Maltese people in general. - The Malta Football Association will soon be applying to have the Centenary Stadium at Ta' Qali sanctioned by UEFA to start hosting UEFA club competition matches.
Following the change in the format of UEFA competitions, the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Europa League, which has now replaced the UEFA Cup, will kick-off earlier than usual. The first leg of the first qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League will be played on June 30 and July 1 while the first leg of the first qualifying round of the UEFA Europa League will be played on July 2. The second legs will be played a week later - July 7, 8 and 9.
The second qualifying rounds of the two competitions will be played between July 14-16 (first legs) and July 21-23 (second legs).
Since the seeding process at the National Stadium starts after the final of the U*BET FA Trophy, the pitch would not be ready to host these matches at such an early stage. For this reason, the association will continue to upgrade the facilities of the Centenary Stadium so that this venue could host UEFA club competition matches.
Works over the past eighteen months included the installation of a FIFA 2-Star artificial turf pitch, an electronic scoreboard and seats while in the coming weeks, a PA system, which is also part of the UEFA requirements, will be installed.
As from next summer, Malta will be represented by four clubs in UEFA club competitions. - Amendments to the statute of the Malta Football Association were approved unanimously during an Extraordinary General Meeting which was held on Thursday at the Centenary Hall, Ta' Qali.
These amendments dealt mainly with the Independent Arbitration Tribunal, the official playing season and the objectives of the association.
The football season, which used to kick-off on July 1st, will now commence on the 8th June and end on the 7th June.
This change was of utmost importance for local teams representing Malta in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League - formerly UEFA Cup - as these clubs will be able to register new players in time to take part in the first qualifying rounds of the two competitions.
Under previous regulations, transfers were only possible as from July 1st and since the first qualifying rounds of the UEFA competitions will kick-off as early as June 30th and with the Euro Challenge Cup expected to be held sometime in June, clubs would have been unable to sign new players in time.
As regards the regulations governing the Independent Arbitration Tribunal. This tribunal is the last and final instance, provided that an appeal from a first decision has already been made and decided by the Appeals Board. In any arbitration procedure, the Tribunal consists of a Chairman and two other members, nominated by the plaintiff and the defendant from an approved list.
The amendments regarding the Independent Arbitration Tribunal which were approved specify that all the members of the tribunal shall remain independent of the parties and any circumstances likely to affect their independence with respect to any of the parties should be immediately disclosed.
Meanwhile another important amendment states that the association may "borrow and raise monies as it may determine and if necessary for this purpose or for any other purpose in the interest of the association to hypotecate its present and future movable and immovable property."
The objectives of the association now also include "observing the principles of loyalty, integrity and sportsmanship in accordance with the principles of fair play." This statement was included following a request by UEFA.

- The January transfer window opens on Friday giving clubs their first opportunity to sign or transfer players since the end of August. Most transfers are expected to involve foreign players with a number of clubs set to sign up to two new foreign players.
One club which has already made up its mind on signing two new foreign players is champions Valletta. The Citizens had started the season with two foreigners - the striker from Cameroon Njongo Priso and Brazilian forward Marcelo Tolomeotti. However the latter failed to impress and was released in October. Over the past weeks, Valletta considered making another attempt to sign two Nigerian players who were already expected for a trial in summer. Another Nigerian player, Frederic Otikrepen, joined the club for a trial in November. The last two players to join Valletta for a trial were Argentine forward Sebastian Aset and Brazilian striker Paolo Massaro.
Valletta has now settled for Massaro and former City favourite Sebastian Monesterolo.
This will be Monesterolo's third spell with Valletta, having joined them for the first time in January 2006. One year later, he moved to Kuwait, joining Al-Kuwait Sporting Club. Six months later, he returned to Malta but last summer, he left Malta once again to join AEK Larnaca in Cyprus. Failure to obtain an EU passport meant that he was not registered by the Cypriot club and ended up playing with Israeli Second Division side Hapoel Bnei Lod.
Massaro played for several Brazilian clubs including Botafogo, Comercial, Juventus, Atletico, Rio Claro, Iraty, Rio Branco, Ulbra and finally Paraná Clube.
Another club who is expected to have two new foreigners is Birkirkara.
Last summer, the Stripes had confirmed Ronni Hartvig and Emil Yantchev and following the departure of Amed Davy Sylla, they signed Brazilian William Sander Landim.
Yantchev shocked the club in October when he decided to move to Northern Cyprus. On the other hand, Landim was released by the club last week after an unimpressive spell with the club.
Birkirkara have already secured the services of Bulgarian defender Ivailo Sokolov. A 24-year old defender who will join the club on loan from PFC Vihren Sandanski till the end of the season.
The other new signing is expected to be 22-year old Bulgarian striker Krasen Valkov who used to play for Vihar and PFK Marek Dupnitza.
Floriana lost Serbian goalkeeper Dejan Maksic and are expected to replace him with the signing of former Sliema Wanderers goalkeeper Murphy Akanji who was still without a club after the termination of his contract by mutual consent in summer.
The Greens have another two foreigners on their books, namely Argentine midfielder Pablo Doffo and Montenegrin striker Aleksandar Madzar. However Floriana are hoping to sign 22-year old Brazilian striker Rodrigo Felix. Felix played for Paysandru, Avai, Noroeste, Ceilandia and Brasiliense in Brazil before playing for Alcanenense in Portugal.
Floriana will have to release Madzar in order to sign Felix.
After starting the season with Zoran Levnaic, Ronaldo Ortega and Alex Noronha, Hamrun Spartans only retained the Serbian midfielder and over the past weeks found a replacement for the two Brazilian players.
The club's new foreigners are Romanian defender Florin Anton and Dutch striker Sylvano Comvalius.
30-year old Anton used to play for FCM Targoviste, Alpan Sotanga and UTChim Gaesti in Romania and had a short spell with Club Deportivo Onda in Spain. On the other hand, 21-year old Comvalius played for Diemen, Ajax, AFC, FC Omniworld and Quick Boys.
Sliema Wanderers could also sign new foreign players. They started the season with Australian midfielder Daniel Severino and Serbian striker Kosta Bjedov. They also had seventeen-year old Victor Coto, who hails from Costa Rica, who is yet to make his debut for the club.
However Bjedov sustained an injury in October and since his recovery took much longer than expected, he was released by the Wanderers.
Msida St. Joseph are not expected to make any changes to their foreign line-up unless a good offer from abroad arrives for Brazilian striker Pedro Dos Santos Calcado. The other two foreigners are Brazilians Andre Rocha Da Silva and Marcos Aurelio.
Leaders Hibernians together with Marsaxlokk, Qormi and Tarxien Rainbows, on the other hand, seem intentioned on retaining the foreigners on their books, only making local signings.
